Technical Description of Windows Media Audio (WMA)

Windows Media Audio, or WMA as it is known in the short hand form, is a form of audio that can be played on windows computers and other computers as well. It is the type of audio format that is associated with Windows Media Player. That is the program that is used by default in windows to play video or audio file. There are often audio formats that the Windows Media Player cannot play, and so it converts them to windows media audio so that you can get smooth playback. Also, sometimes the windows media audio quality is better than other audio files, so it is better to have the files converted.

WMA is quite popular, however it is not as popular as the MP3 format. MP3 is the format of audio that is downloaded most often and is used in iTunes and most portable music players. However, most players also support WMA now and it is widely used. Now there is also WMA pro which is a version of high definition audio that has better quality and bit rates than MP3. Bit rates are what is used to measure the quality of a sound file. WMA has improved but will never be as widespread as MP3 files.
